We just finished up planting on Sunday and we are already back out in the field flaming seed corn. The reason for flaming the corn is to delay the male corn plant’s growth. This is done in an alternating pattern to extend pollination.

Fun Fact: You can tell if a plant has been flamed if you hold your thumb on the leaf and it leaves a thumb print.

Notice the thumb print on the leaf of the plant
